Being mobile
Depending on our business type, as a small business owner, we are always on the go.
Building the business, working in the business and if nothing else, worrying about the business.
We are responsible so we MUST be connected to the business no matter where we are.
In Part 1 I highlighted how important it is to have a suitable place to sit and work. In addition to this, the modern workspace dictates we MUST be able to carry much if not all of our business with us. Of course, we can't pick up the physical office and put it in our bag but we should have immediate access to the following.
All of our files and documents produced for and from the business
Our accounting system
Our business email
Direct communication with key staff (not just the public phone number of the business)
All of our business contacts both suppliers and customers
As a business owner today it is possible to carry all of these things in our pocket.
A typical mobile day for me usually starts with coffee in my favourite coffee shop. What is great about that apart from the coffee is that my entire office and everything I need comes with me. I use 2 systems continuously. GSuite and Evernote.
I have access to all my files, email, calendar, contacts etc through GSuite (Google Suite). All of my project information, notes, workflows and everything else in my life is in Evernote. I like to keep my digital office closely connected so it is usual to find links to Evernote notes embedded in Google Suite and vice-versa.
I carry a single paper notebook and a couple of pens because I like to brainstorm on paper and when you get a phone call and have to write something down in a hurry, pen and paper will still beat digital every time for speed.
I have found my phone and my tablet has been all I need in most circumstances. Attached to a Bluetooth keyboard I can do just about anything. When I know I will be in one place for the day, I will take my laptop as it is still easier to do bigger jobs on a more purpose built, business machine.
The whole point is, I am as productive as I can be with a well set up desk and office, so there should be no reason for that productivity to drop when I am out and about.
It's about making the most of the technology we have available today.
Be productive every day.
