What I got out of it was that chkdsk with no parameters runs in read only mode, so stopping it should be safe. Running it with parameters like /r put it into read-write mode, and that's where you run the risk of data corruption. I don't think it'll be safe to stop until it gets to the later steps where it's just verifying. here's that link:
